Women in India

The article „ How India treats its women“ is about how poor women live in today’s India. The source of the article is based on the death of an Indian woman who was raped for hours by six men on a public bus in India.

The article is not only about Indian women being raped, but also about the rising crime against women in India in general. Daily Indian women face violence and suppression by their husbands, they are  sold or forced into prostitution, kidnapped, molested, tortured or victims of acid or sexual harassment, because they either refuse to obey their husbands or refuse to live by their husbands` laws.

The right of the husbands are very discriminating for India women.

Indian women are often left by their husbands when they give birth to baby girls. When they expect baby girls they often have to have an abortion. It is not illegal  for men to have more than one wife. When the woman betrays her husband he normally punishes her. A punishment could be that the woman is subjected to acid attacks, set fire to or excluded from society.

In the book Q & A, Nita is a young woman with only few rights. She is forced into prostitution and is controlled by her own brother who makes the position clear to Ram : “I see, so you have been giving her all these stupid ideas. Listen, you bastard, nobody tells Nita to stop working. Only I can tell her that. And I don’t want her stop working. She is the golden goose which lays the golden eggs. And I want those eggs to keep coming for a long time.”

In the film Slumdog Millionaire Latika is in the same position. However, she is not a prostitute, but still controlled by Salim and some other men.

Latika is forced to dance and to live with a man whom she does not love.

A few months ago an Indian women woman was raped on a public bus. After this tragic episode the Indian population was out in the streets demonstrating against the horrible circumstances conditions and the poor lack of safety most  Indian women face every day.
The lack of safety of for the Indian women has become a big problem in  Indian society. Every day Indian women are raped or sexually harassed by their own husbands or other males., A condition circumstance which doesn’t seem to bother most of the Indian population. After the recent protest women and pares part of the Indian population hope that the politicians finally will will finally awake wake up and do something in order to protect their women.
